Hardboard (HB), also known as hardboard panels, is an engineered wood product made from finely ground natural wood fibers, mixed with water and hot-pressed under very high pressure (without glue), creating a board with very high hardness and density. The surface is smooth, flat, and even, which can be painted or laminated depending on usage needs.
Hardboard comes in 2 main types: plain HB (smooth on both sides) and grooved HB (one smooth side – one side with evenly spaced square grooves like a honeycomb). The grooved type is often used for the back of cabinets, wardrobe backs, kitchen cabinet backs, bookshelf backs, drawer bottoms, or in industrial applications requiring ventilation and moisture release.
Advantages of hardboard: cheap, light, hard, good surface strength, easy to process, and does not delaminate. Thanks to its uniform fiber-pressed structure, it does not chip like particle board when lightly impacted.
However, hardboard is not moisture resistant, so it is only suitable for dry areas without water exposure. If moisture resistance is needed, choose moisture-resistant MDF with Melamine surface or Plywood.
Common specifications: 1220 x 2440mm, typical thicknesses 2.5mm – 3mm – 3.5mm – 5mm. Can be cut, jointed, nailed, glued, or painted.
